Netflix Player

It was inevitable, but via Roku, Netflix has released a set-top box that streams a chunk of its library over the internets to your teletube. It’s cheap, rolling in at $99 and does not require any other subscription fees as long as your regular Netflix subscription is at least $9 a month. When it comes to the interface, it does things a little differently than all the other set-top-video-on-demand-box hyphenates out there: the Netflix library is not listed through the box, rather you use your browser to put selections into the Netflix Queue in your account. Advantageous in that the box does not rely on clunky on-screen keyboards, loading long lists of potential choices, but perhaps irking when you’re too drunk to go fetch your laptop in the other room. At the end of the day, the price point and the sheer simplicity (think of all the less savvy users who have come to master Netflix in recent years - they won’t have to learn a new interface) makes this a formidable entry in this over-saturated and underselling market. Step it up, AppleTV.

Aquave: An Icon Family Effort

Now here’s a great idea - all-star collaboration - that we hope to see more of across the GUI galaxy, Aquave by Laurent Baumann. Mr. Baumann designed the basis of the impressively large set, but to sweeten the deal, he invited some of the most talented icon artists to work on it. Jonas Rask, Dustin Schau, Dan Deming-Henes and Miles Ponson have all contributed to this icon project which will be ongoing - there is an RSS feed that will alert fans to new additions in the future!

Available for Mac and in PNG format.

Single Professor Seeking Adventure, Hates Snakes

It’s only a few weeks before the long-and-oft-delayed fourth chapter in one of popular cinema’s most beloved series, Indiana Jones, either lets us relive our childhood dreams or dashes them against the mountain. The Iconfactory’s Anthony Piraino has designed four sets of Jones-themed icons for Mac, Windows and Candybar, based on each film that will release each week until the release of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. This week, it’s a set based on the movie that started it all, Raiders of the Lost Ark. These are officially authorized icons too! Additionally, the official Indiana Jones site has desktops and AIM icons!
